{"id":7203,"date":"2024-10-29T13:16:47","date_gmt":"2024-10-29T13:16:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kmtraining.org\/institutionalizing-adolescent-youth-sexual-and-reproductive-health-programs\/"},"modified":"2024-10-29T13:16:47","modified_gmt":"2024-10-29T13:16:47","slug":"institutionalizing-adolescent-youth-sexual-and-reproductive-health-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kmtraining.org\/fr\/institutionalizing-adolescent-youth-sexual-and-reproductive-health-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Institutionalizing Adolescent and Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\" id=\"wpb-content-root\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_empty_space\"   style=\"height: 32px\"><span class=\"vc_empty_space_inner\"><\/span><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A promising partnership was initiated and nurtured by the Knowledge SUCCESS Team in the East Africa Region following its first knowledge management intervention with Anglophone Youth Focal Points during the Youth Pre-Conference sessions at the Amref Health Africa -hosted Pan-African <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ahaic.org\/download-category\/ahaic-2023\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Africa Health Agenda International Conference (AHAIC) <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0in Kigali, Rwanda, in 2023. During this event, 10 youth focal points were introduced to key knowledge management principles. Building on this foundation, a focused effort was made to assess this subgroup&#8217;s institutional structure and KM needs within the FP2030 framework. Together with the ESA Youth Engagement Manager, it was determined that strengthening the youth\u2019s capacity to exercise agency within the focal point structure was critical to fulfilling their mandate. Through consultations with the ESA Hub, the Learning Circles Approach was identified as a KM solution, designed to accommodate the varying levels of maturity among the youth focal points and the diverse institutional, policy, cultural, and social contexts they operate in, fostering knowledge sharing, learning, and collaborative solutions. In January 2024, a collaboration of efforts between the East and Southern Africa (ESA) and North, West and Central Africa (NWCA) Hubs was initiated to deliver this intervention amongst the FP2030 Youth Focal Points in Africa.\u00a0 Knowledge SUCCESS through the East Africa and West Africa Regional teams designed and implemented a series<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of hybrid peer-to-peer learning sessions that engaged 50 youth focal points and young leaders from Africa in candid conversations on <\/span><b>&#8220;institutionalizing adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health programs.&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_empty_space\"   style=\"height: 32px\"><span class=\"vc_empty_space_inner\"><\/span><\/div>\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left wpb_content_element\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper  \"><\/div><figcaption class=\"vc_figure-caption\"><\/figcaption>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/knowledgesuccess.org\/learning-circles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Knowledge SUCCESS\u2019s Learning Circles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a participatory, peer-to-peer learning program for global health professionals, enabling participants to discuss and share key success factors and challenges in priority areas of program implementation such as family planning and reproductive health (FP\/RH) and adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health (AYSRH).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The hybrid Learning Circles series consisted of:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Three virtual sessions were held in March 2024 where participants learned about the technical topic and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">thematic frameworks and discussed what\u2019s working well in AYSRH program implementation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two bilingual face-to-face sessions held in Ghana in April 2024 that focused on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">what could be improved and how participants can enact change on an individual level.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These sessions provided a platform for sharing practical experiences, successes, challenges, and solutions, enabling participants to implement effective strategies within their respective organizations, networks, platforms, and countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What\u2019s working well?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Participants used knowledge exchange techniques such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liberatingstructures.com\/5-appreciative-interviews-ai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Appreciative Inquiry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8221; The commitments spanned various themes, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Engaging decision-makers to strengthen attention on AYSRH priority topics and programs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Working with youth-led organizations to strengthen their capacity to advocate for AYSRH and enhance their knowledge of FP2030 country commitments.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Organizing a knowledge sharing event, such as a meeting, webinar, or intergenerational dialogue, with and for youth and youth-led organizations on AYSRH topics.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Developing databases and mapping services of youth-led organizations and services.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Lessons Learned<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Finally, participants discussed how to apply the lessons learned from the implementation of their project in their respective countries to the challenges likely to be encountered in future FP\/RH programs. During the session, participants were invited to imagine such a scenario:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 500\">&#8220;Your country&#8217;s AYSRH program has evolved over time to become a model of the key elements of successful AYSRH programs. Other countries are looking to you to learn how your AYSRH program works so they can replicate it or adapt it to their own context<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&#8221;<\/span>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the participants, the following factors are critical to ensuring this spectacular success:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Collaboration with other young leaders in the field of AYSRH and involvement of young people and without discrimination.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Political commitment to improving FP\/RH policies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The implementation of a strategy based on a holistic approach that integrates the various stakeholders (e.g., political decision-makers, CSOs, traditional and religious leaders, people living with disabilities)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Training teachers and school staff to deliver the concept of health and reproduction appropriately<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_empty_space\"   style=\"height: 32px\"><span class=\"vc_empty_space_inner\"><\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h2><b>Feedback about Learning Circles<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From East to West Africa, all together: a great learning opportunity from South to South, and a step towards overcoming the language barrier.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This particular Learning Circles cohort was unique. While Knowledge SUCCESS typically convenes cohorts among program practitioners working in the same region, this cohort was an inter-regional one, comprising participants from East, West, and Central Africa. What was even more unique was that by engaging young focal points and young people committed to FP\/RH in the countries covered by FP 2030&#8217;s various African hubs, we did great south to south learning and broke down language barriers and also gave young people an opportunity to bring their different knowledge to the table, according to their different contexts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There were a few bumps in the road, but we met the challenge! We had bilingual facilitators who spoke in both French and English, provided various tools and presentations in both French and English, and also made use of interpretation services for some sessions. These are all examples of significant elements to plan for and prioritize when organizing knowledge exchanges sessions and should be placed at the heart of taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kmtraining.org\/checklist-for-assessing-equity-in-km\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">equity into account in knowledge management.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The young participants welcomed our equitable Learning Circles approach, who spoke of the importance of linguistic cross-fertilization.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n[rs_blockquote cite=&#8221;Demba Samba B\u00e2, FP2030\/Ouagadougou Partnership youth focal point for Senegal&#8221;]Beyond the sessions, it&#8217;s a good experience for us to be together and to be able to dialogue. We&#8217;ve all made an effort to understand each other. And it&#8217;s also a good opportunity to practice the language.[\/rs_blockquote]<div class=\"vc_empty_space\"   style=\"height: 32px\"><span class=\"vc_empty_space_inner\"><\/span><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One thing is certain for these young people: this is the kind of experience to be repeated, with the aim of always improving a little more.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_tta-container\" data-vc-action=\"collapse\"><div class=\"vc_general vc_tta vc_tta-accordion vc_tta-color-custom vc_tta-style-classic vc_tta-shape-rounded vc_tta-o-shape-group vc_tta-controls-align-left\" style=\"--vc-tta-color: #F8F8F8; --vc-tta-color-contrast: #666; --vc-tta-spacing: 0px; --vc-tta-gap: 0px;\"><div class=\"vc_tta-panels-container\"><div class=\"vc_tta-panels\"><div class=\"vc_tta-panel vc_active\" id=\"\" data-vc-content=\".vc_tta-panel-body\"><div class=\"vc_tta-panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"vc_tta-panel-title vc_tta-controls-icon-position-left\"><a href=\"#\" data-vc-accordion data-vc-container=\".vc_tta-container\"><span class=\"vc_tta-title-text\">Additional Reflections<\/span><i class=\"vc_tta-controls-icon vc_tta-controls-icon-plus\"><\/i><\/a><\/h4><\/div><div class=\"vc_tta-panel-body\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;This session was very informative and I feel that by using the knowledge gained, I can improve my advocacy work and help me develop more strategies.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve learned that we all have challenges and we all have solutions. I&#8217;ve learned that sharing challenges with colleagues can be helpful in finding solutions.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;The new thing I&#8217;ve learned is that we mustn&#8217;t limit ourselves in the implementation of our work.
