{"id":6744,"date":"2023-09-29T12:38:26","date_gmt":"2023-09-29T12:38:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kmtraining.org\/equity-what-does-it-look-like-in-knowledge-management-2\/"},"modified":"2023-09-29T12:38:26","modified_gmt":"2023-09-29T12:38:26","slug":"equity-what-does-it-look-like-in-knowledge-management-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kmtraining.org\/fr\/equity-what-does-it-look-like-in-knowledge-management-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Equity: What Does It Look Like in Knowledge Management?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\" id=\"wpb-content-root\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At Knowledge SUCCESS, we work closely with family planning and reproductive health (FP\/RH) projects around the world to support their knowledge management (KM) efforts\u2014that is, to share what works and what doesn\u2019t work in programs, so we can learn from each other, adapt and scale up best practices, and avoid repeating past mistakes.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">FP\/RH programs have a strong emphasis on eliminating inequities. For example, programs have noted that achieving universal health coverage \u201centails making services, including sexual and reproductive health care, available to people who have been excluded from them because of cost, gender or geography\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/esaro.unfpa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/pub-pdf\/EN_WEB-READY_SWOP%202017%20report_0.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UNFPA 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Issues of equity are also an important consideration for the KM systems and initiatives that support FP\/RH and global health programs. For example:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do facilitators, moderators, speakers, hosts, and panelists of webinars and other learning exchange events reflect diverse backgrounds or perspectives?[su_spacer size=&#8221;5&#8243;]<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do FP\/RH professionals have opportunities to share and discuss in the languages they are most comfortable using?[su_spacer size=&#8221;5&#8243;]<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do authorship policies exclude the contributions made by certain groups of the health workforce, such as researchers in low- and middle-income countries who are often the people collecting the data that informs research articles?[su_spacer size=&#8221;5&#8243;]<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do KM initiatives budget appropriately to incorporate equitable elements, such as translation or interpretation services and printing or digital costs?[su_spacer size=&#8221;5&#8243;]<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Are roles and responsibilities distributed equitably among KM team members?[su_spacer size=&#8221;5&#8243;] <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We believe it\u2019s important to engage, include, and value the ideas, skills, and experiences of all members of the health workforce to inform program development and implementation and to reshape the systems in which we work, including our KM systems. Believing in this is one thing \u2026 putting this into practice takes intentional efforts and actions. Starting with a shared definition of what equitable KM means can help.[su_spacer size=&#8221;15&#8243;]<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h1><b>What Does Equity in KM Mean?<\/b><\/h1>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><b>We<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/kmtraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/building-better-programs-second-edition-optimized.pdf\"> <b>define equity in KM<\/b><\/a><b> as \u201cthe absence of unfair, avoidable, and remediable differences in knowledge creation, access, sharing, and use among groups of health workforce members, whether those groups are defined socially, economically, or environmentally.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> If you\u2019re familiar with the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/health-equity#tab=tab_1\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">WHO definition of health equity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, our definition of equity in KM might sound familiar to you. We\u2019ve adapted WHO\u2019s definition in recognition that some groups of health workforce members may need more support or resources to define and participate in the KM cycle and to achieve the same KM outcomes as other groups with historically more power and privilege. Further, similar to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.refworld.org\/pdfid\/4538838d0.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">four essential elements of health services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, we define <\/span><b>four essential elements of KM tools and techniques:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left wpb_content_element\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper  \"><\/div><figcaption class=\"vc_figure-caption\"><\/figcaption>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h1><b>Examples of Equitable KM Interventions<\/b><\/h1>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/knowledgesuccess.org\/the-pitch\/season-two\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pitch Season 2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> KM Innovators provide concrete examples of how we can make quality KM interventions available and accessible, using methods that are acceptable and relevant to their intended audiences (see table). The Pitch is a global competition hosted by Knowledge SUCCESS that provides funding to start or scale KM initiatives in select countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Season 2, five organizations based in India, Kenya, Madagascar, Nepal, and Nigeria implemented KM interventions in creative and context-specific ways to ensure that family planning data, information, and guidelines were accessible, shared, and used by key stakeholders in FP\/RH programs. For example, Strong Enough Girls Empowerment Initiative hosted a podcast with indigenous young people while Blind Youth Association Nepal created disability-inclusive FP\/RH guidelines.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_left wpb_content_element\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper  \"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n[rs_special_text align=&#8221;center&#8221;]<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During a consultation workshop, Blind Youth Association Nepal (BYAN) engaged people living with disabilities to inform the development of disability-inclusive FP\/SRH guidelines. \u00a9 BYAN style=\"font-weight: 400\">checklist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (in English and French) to<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-18556 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/kmtraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Pic.png\" alt=\"Cover image of &quot;Checklist for Assessing Equity in Knowledge Management Initiatives&quot; program guide.\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" \/> help FP\/RH and global health teams\u2014including our own Knowledge SUCCESS team\u2014assess and achieve equity in KM initiatives. The Checklist for Assessing Equity in Knowledge Management Initiatives includes broad systems considerations, such as team roles, operations, norms, and resources, as well as considerations for each of the five steps in the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kmtraining.org\/the-knowledge-management-road-map\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">KM Road Map<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for global health programs: 1) Assess Needs, 2) Design Strategy, 3) Create and Iterate, 4) Mobilize and Monitor, and 5) Evaluate and Evolve. For example, the goal of Step 3 is to develop new KM tools and techniques, or tailor existing tones, to facilitate information sharing and use and achieve the KM objectives to support your FP\/RH or global health program. The checklist includes key questions to ensure your KM tools and techniques are available, accessible, acceptable, and of high quality for all members of your intended audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<section class=\"vc_cta3-container\" style=\"width:100%;\"><div class=\"vc_general vc_do_cta3 vc_cta3 vc_cta3-style-classic vc_cta3-shape-rounded vc_cta3-align-center vc_cta3-icon-size-md\"><div class=\"vc_cta3_content-container\"><div class=\"vc_cta3-content\"><header class=\"vc_cta3-content-header\"><\/header><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A companion<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kmtraining.org\/checklist-for-assessing-equity-in-km\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">how-to guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> provides additional context to help understand and answer each checklist question. The checklist doesn\u2019t have a scoring system. Instead, space is provided to answer yes, no, or somewhat\/unsure, with the goal of identifying areas of strength and where additional work may be needed to ensure equitable KM.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h1><b>How Knowledge SUCCESS Has Been Using the Equity Checklist <\/b><\/h1>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our own teams have been implementing the equity checklist in different ways. For some teams, their members complete the checklist individually and then meet as a group to discuss their results while other teams complete the checklist together as a group. In general, our teams complete the checklist from start to finish to provide a \u201cbaseline\u201d of equity integration into their KM processes. From that baseline, they identify priority actions they need to take to improve equity integration and meet periodically to assess progress. As the checklist takes you through the systematic KM Road Map process, it allows teams to complete it at the beginning stages of implementing a KM activity, in the middle to see how milestones are changing, and at the end to take stock.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So, what did we learn from this exercise? In general, our teams all voiced a need to create time and space for these types of discussions. They all agreed that it was especially critical to have these discussions <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">before<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> starting any new KM initiative or activity. It can be easy, when there\u2019s a lot of to-do items to get an activity up and running, to overlook some key questions such as whether we\u2019re ensuring gender diversity among selected participants of our KM events or to consider who we are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reaching with our chosen approaches. The equity checklist can help to keep these issues front and center as new activities unfold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We\u2019ve recapped some of our main areas of strengths and opportunities for growth below.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_accordion wpb_content_element  not-column-inherit\" data-collapsible=\"\" data-vc-disable-keydown=\"false\" data-active-tab=\"1\">\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper wpb_accordion_wrapper ui-accordion\">\n\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_accordion_section group\">\n\t\t<h3 class=\"wpb_accordion_header ui-accordion-header\"><a href=\"#what-are-we-already-doing-well-around-equitable-km\">What are we already doing well around equitable KM?<\/a><\/h3>\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_accordion_content ui-accordion-content vc_clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Web accessibility: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Knowledge SUCCESS websites, tools, and platforms are designed with accessibility in mind to make sure people with disabilities can access FP\/RH resources. For example, we always include alt text in web images, making it easier for users with screen-readers to read our content and we recently just published the first audio version of a blog <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledgesuccess.org\/2023\/04\/11\/enabling-universal-health-coverage-with-the-private-sector\/?hilite=Adam+lewis\">post<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0so that people can listen instead of reading.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Language inclusivity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/knowledgesuccess.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Knowledge SUCCESS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fpinsight.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">FP insight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> websites have auto-translate features available for multiple languages. Our content is often translated by human translators into French and we always offer simultaneous interpretation into French for our webinars since francophone FP\/RH professionals are one of our key audiences. We are also aware of the need to include more diverse and non-colonial languages and are part of this conversation in the global health space.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Authorship of content and images: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We give credit to all individuals who had a role in conceptualizing, contributing to, or writing content pieces, and we always ask for consent when taking pictures during online and in-person events and when sharing images.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_accordion_section group\">\n\t\t<h3 class=\"wpb_accordion_header ui-accordion-header\"><a href=\"#what-can-we-do-to-ensure-a-more-equitable-km\">What can we do to ensure a more equitable KM?<\/a><\/h3>\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_accordion_content ui-accordion-content vc_clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Disabilities: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To ensure our online events and other knowledge sharing opportunities are as inclusive as possible, we want to ask participants when they sign up for an event if they have any accommodation need that we should take into account.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Diversifying partnership: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We aim to partner with more groups that are founded and based in the countries of implementation of our geographic areas of focus. Again, we are asking ourselves, who are we missing?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Co-creation<\/b>: We have had great experience with <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledgesuccess.org\/the-future-of-knowledge-management-for-family-planning-and-reproductive-health\/\">co-creating knowledge solutions<\/a> with FP\/RH professionals and want to continue supporting and strengthening similar opportunities that are inclusive and representative of FP\/RH professionals\u2019 needs and preferences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For more guidance on how to integrate equity in KM, check out the related <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kmtraining.org\/course\/how-to-integrate-equity-in-km\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">training module<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the KM Training Package for Global Health Programs.
