Instead, knowledge remains with the people implementing projects or within government ministries.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Alex&#8217;s observations are echoed in the project&#8217;s landscaping and co-creation findings that it has used for strategic planning on the East African family planning and reproductive health ecosystem. It revealed no evidence of formal structures for sharing and institutionalizing family planning and reproductive health knowledge in the region.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_center wpb_content_element\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"vc_figure-caption\"><\/figcaption>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h3>Piecing Together the Puzzle<\/h3>\n<p>To tackle the identified knowledge management challenges, Knowledge SUCCESS mobilized family planning and reproductive health stakeholders in the region to specifically address the knowledge management jigsaw puzzle. \u201cWe hosted and facilitated a family planning and reproductive health <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledge-gateway.org\/fprheastafrica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Communaut\u00e9 de pratique<\/a>, which serves as <strong>a platform for practitioners in the region<\/strong> to generate, manage, and utilize knowledge and information pathways within the family planning and reproductive health discipline,\u201d says Alex.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Knowledge SUCCESS is a USAID-funded global project led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/ccp.jhu.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs<\/a> in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/amref.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amref Health Africa<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/busaracenter.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Busara Center for Behavioral Economics<\/a>, et <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhi360.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FHI 360<\/a>. The project champions the strategic and systematic use of knowledge to strengthen health systems and ultimately improve health and development outcomes. Its goal is to help organizations working in family planning and reproductive health collect knowledge and information, organize it, connect others to it, and make it easier for people to use.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><em>The project champions the strategic and systematic use of knowledge to strengthen health systems and ultimately improve health and development outcomes.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h3>The Family Planning Community of Practice<\/h3>\n<p>Alex shares that creating the family planning Community of Practice involved strategic engagements with civil society organizations, government ministries of health, and Technical Working Groups. \u201cKnowledge management is a strategic and systematic process of collecting and curating knowledge and connecting people to it so they can act effectively,\u201d he says. \u201cOur members are sharing important updates and current events and holding topical discussions on a variety of subjects such as policy engagement gaps, gender equality and family planning, private sector investment in family planning and reproductive health, maternal health, and the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Composed of policymakers, civil society representatives and program managers, technical advisors, and convenors, <strong>Technical Working Groups were targeted<\/strong> because these structures are made up of individuals who advise governments on family planning policies and can contextualize guidelines from a global perspective.<\/p>\n<p>James Mlali, the Advocacy Technical Manager for Advance Family Planning and a member of a Technical Working Group in Tanzania, enumerates the benefits accrued from the family planning Community of Practice. \u201cMy network has expanded. I have gained skills in the use of online platforms including Zoom and Google Documents. My advocacy skills have greatly been sharpened through the skills-building sessions. I now can conceptualize issues better and propose implementable advocacy solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_center wpb_content_element\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"vc_figure-caption\"><\/figcaption>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h3>The Role of Partnerships<\/h3>\n<p>The Community of Practice is <strong>forged through collaborations and partnerships<\/strong>. Sarah Harlan, the Partnerships Team Lead at Knowledge SUCCESS, says that this is done to ensure that useful, accurate, and actionable family planning and reproductive health knowledge and information flows up and down the health system\u2014from regional, national, and sub-national levels to the global level and back again. Such knowledge is used consistently to improve systems and policies within family planning and reproductive health and, broadly, across all health sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Knowledge SUCCESS cooperates with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/knowledgesuccess.org\/content_partners\/\">over 40 global, regional, and country-level partners<\/a><\/strong> on activities ranging from developing online content to organizing family planning and reproductive health Communities of Practice, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/kupenda.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kupenda for the Children<\/a>\u2014Knowledge SUCCESS partnered with Kupenda for the Children to develop content, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fknowledgesuccess.org%2F2021%2F04%2F06%2Fchallenging-social-norms-on-disability%2F%3Fhilite%3D%2527kupenda%2527&amp;data=04%7C01%7Ctmurra35%40jh.edu%7C0eb2995122564d0db01a08d967cfbf2a%7C9fa4f438b1e6473b803f86f8aedf0dec%7C0%7C0%7C637654964222533119%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=ykN2Eyqkueq%2FK6Bzzvo65YdeObZGg55CtWWsJXp8cfE%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Q&amp;A<\/a> with Founder and Executive Director Cynthia Bauer. It also participated in Knowledge SUCCESS\u2019 Connecting Conversations session on <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fknowledgesuccess.org%2F2021%2F07%2F20%2Fyoung-people-with-disabilities-ensuring-inclusive-access-to-srh-services%2F%3Fhilite%3D%2527disabilities%2527&amp;data=04%7C01%7Ctmurra35%40jh.edu%7C0eb2995122564d0db01a08d967cfbf2a%7C9fa4f438b1e6473b803f86f8aedf0dec%7C0%7C0%7C637654964222533119%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=DZ%2BHnyfQqjms7EqQ7Qaz6Q85gLtiiYFob%2F1X9L%2Fy91E%3D&amp;reserved=0\">ensuring inclusive access to sexual and reproductive health services for young people with disabilities<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/livinggoods.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Living Goods<\/a>\u2014Knowledge SUCCESS partnered with Living Goods to <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledgesuccess.org\/2021\/03\/11\/a-closer-look-at-community-health-and-family-planning-in-action\/?hilite=%27living%27%2C%27goods%27\" rel=\"noopener\">develop content<\/a>. Additionally, Living Goods\u2019 staff participated in the Learning Circles Anglophone Africa cohort, which concluded in July 2021. The team has been instrumental in East Africa\u2019s FP\/RH Community of Practice.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youngandalive.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Young &amp; Alive Initiative<\/a>\u2014At the onset of the pandemic, Knowledge SUCCESS East Africa engaged the young people of the region through digital platforms to initiate the COVID-19 <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledgesuccess.org\/2020\/07\/01\/sustaining-access-to-voluntary-reproductive-health-care-in-east-africa\/\">Youth Task Force<\/a>. Knowledge SUCCESS continues to partner with Knowledge Management Champions in Tanzania who support advocacy and knowledge-brokering work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe idea is that knowledge products would be made <strong>with<\/strong> our audiences, not <strong>for<\/strong> them and, as a result, would be widely used to optimize family planning and reproductive health programs and services and, ultimately, improve the health of women, men, and families around the world,\u201d Harlan explains. Partnerships, Harlan adds, were informed by a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledgesuccess.org\/2020\/08\/11\/participant-perspectives-knowledge-management-design-thinking-regional-cocreation-workshops\/\">co-creation workshops<\/a> Knowledge SUCCESS conducted in 2020 in Africa, Asia, and the United States. \u201cWe use the learnings from the co-creation workshops to ensure that our partnerships activities are innovative, forward-thinking, and meeting the needs of our audiences,\u201d she notes.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><em>\u201cThe idea is that knowledge products would be made <strong>with<\/strong> our audiences, not <strong>for<\/strong> them&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h3>Overcoming Challenges<\/h3>\n<p>In East Africa, Knowledge SUCCESS has recruited <strong>knowledge management champions<\/strong> whose roles include advocacy\u2014disseminating knowledge management messages and influencing action and support\u2014to act as local representatives for knowledge management activities. They link project or departmental colleagues to knowledge and information resources outside their area of focus.<\/p>\n<p>Alex explains that the champions are essential because family planning and reproductive health stakeholders seldom have opportunities to rapidly and effectively exchange information with those outside their typical spheres of influence. Too often, <strong>best practices diffuse slowly or there is a lack of coordination<\/strong>. This is coupled with a geographic imbalance in availability and access to information. The current COVID-19 pandemic is also posing considerable knowledge management challenges. <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledgesuccess.org\/2020\/04\/23\/going-virtual-tips-for-hosting-an-effective-virtual-meeting\/\">Engagements are virtual<\/a>, not physical, which can prevent the swift execution of activities.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_center wpb_content_element\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"vc_figure-caption\"><\/figcaption>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h3>A Way Forward<\/h3>\n<p>Nevertheless, to ensure the sustainability and continuity of activities in the region, Alex shares that Knowledge SUCCESS is focusing on <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledgesuccess.org\/2020\/07\/01\/sustaining-access-to-voluntary-reproductive-health-care-in-east-africa\/?hilite=%27youth%27%2C%27engagements%27\">engaging more youth and youth coalitions<\/a> to ensure that youth perspectives are incorporated in ongoing discussions to improve family planning and reproductive health outcomes. East Africa is <strong>launching online knowledge cafes and webinars<\/strong> and working to popularize the Community of Practice to ensure that there are as many members with defined roles and as much engagement as possible.
