{"id":5686,"date":"2021-08-05T19:53:13","date_gmt":"2021-08-05T19:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kmtraining.org\/tips-for-documenting-implementation-stories\/"},"modified":"2026-04-28T12:47:55","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T12:47:55","slug":"tips-for-documenting-implementation-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kmtraining.org\/fr\/tips-for-documenting-implementation-stories\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips for Documenting Implementation Stories"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\" id=\"wpb-content-root\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\" ><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><em>Documenting implementation stories\u2014to share country experiences, lessons learned, and recommendations\u2014strengthens our collective knowledge around what works and what doesn\u2019t when implementing evidence-based interventions in family planning. <a href=\"https:\/\/ibpnetwork.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHO\/IBP Network<\/a> and Knowledge SUCCESS recently published a <a href=\"https:\/\/ibpnetwork.org\/page\/implementation-stories\">series of 15 stories<\/a> highlighting organizations\u2019 experiences implementing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fphighimpactpractices.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High Impact Practices<\/a> (HIPs) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fphighimpactpractices.org\/who-ibp-network-implementation-stories-global-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHO Guidelines and Tools<\/a> in family planning and reproductive health (FP\/RH) programming from around the world. We hope these tips will help others write their own stories.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_empty_space\"   style=\"height: 12px\"><span class=\"vc_empty_space_inner\"><\/span><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<blockquote><p>\n&#8220;What do you wish you had known before starting this work?&#8221;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As countries move toward implementing and scaling up high-impact interventions, the need for documenting implementation stories and sharing knowledge becomes more apparent and more urgent. In order to support and encourage others to document and share their experiences, we\u2019ve compiled this list of tips that we learned from <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledgesuccess.org\/2021\/04\/29\/implementation-stories-how-programs-use-high-impact-practices-and-who-guidelines\">documenting implementation stories<\/a> about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fphighimpactpractices.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High Impact Practices<\/a> (HIPs) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fphighimpactpractices.org\/who-ibp-network-implementation-stories-global-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHO Guidelines and Tools<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Things to Consider Before Getting Started<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ibpnetwork.org\/page\/implementation-stories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read other stories for inspiration and ideas<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Identify:\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>La <strong>histoire<\/strong> you want to tell\u2014what was unique about your experience and why is the topic important?<\/li>\n<li>Your <strong>audience<\/strong>\u2014who will be reading your story? What do they want to know?<\/li>\n<li>La <strong>format<\/strong>\u2014how does your audience prefer to engage with information?<\/li>\n<li>Your <strong>goal<\/strong>\u2014what do you want readers to do after engaging with your content?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Develop a <strong>template<\/strong> for your story. Include the key points that should be included in each section.<\/li>\n<li>Create a <strong>spreadsheet<\/strong>. Don&#8217;t underestimate how long you will need; always build in a buffer around your expected publication date.<\/li>\n<li>If documenting someone else\u2019s experience, consider providing a <strong>stipend<\/strong> to cover their time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_empty_space\"   style=\"height: 12px\"><span class=\"vc_empty_space_inner\"><\/span><\/div>\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_center wpb_content_element\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"vc_figure-caption\"><\/figcaption>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_empty_space\"   style=\"height: 12px\"><span class=\"vc_empty_space_inner\"><\/span><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h3>Deciding What Content to Include<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Title<\/strong>\u2014choose a title that describes the who, what, and where of your story. Consider including unique details of your story that will catch people\u2019s attention.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Background and context<\/strong>\u2014set the scene for your story and describe the organizational or development challenge(s) that prompted you to document your experience.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The need for intervention<\/strong>\u2014why was this activity implemented? What was the problem it aimed to address?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Implementation story<\/strong>\u2014this is the most important part of the story. In your own words, describe <strong>how<\/strong> you implemented the intervention. What was the impact and what <strong>challenges<\/strong> did you face? Provide enough detail so that someone interested in implementing a similar intervention would have a roadmap to follow.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Impact<\/strong>\u2014describe the impact the practice had on individuals and\/or the community. Both quantitative and qualitative data are valuable, and we recommend that both be included when possible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Challenges<\/strong>\u2014note significant challenges the team faced when implementing the intervention. How did you overcome those challenges?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lessons learned and recommendations<\/strong>\u2014lessons and recommendations should be detailed enough so that others are able to integrate them into their work. A good starting point to identify which lessons to document is to ask yourself, \u201cWhat do you wish you had known before starting this work?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_empty_space\"   style=\"height: 12px\"><span class=\"vc_empty_space_inner\"><\/span><\/div><div class=\"vc_separator wpb_content_element vc_separator_align_center vc_sep_shadow vc_sep_border_width_1 vc_sep_pos_align_center wpb_content_element\"   style=\"width: 100%;\"><span class=\"vc_sep_holder vc_sep_holder_l\"><span class=\"vc_sep_line\"><\/span><\/span><div class=\"vc_icon_element vc_icon_element-outer vc_do_icon vc_icon_element-align-left vc_icon_element-have-style\"><div class=\"vc_icon_element-inner  vc_icon_element-have-style-inner vc_icon_element-size-md vc_icon_element-style-rounded vc_icon_element-background\" ><span class=\"vc_icon_element-icon fa fa-lightbulb-o\" style=\"color:#5472D2 !important\"><\/span><\/div><\/div><span class=\"vc_sep_holder vc_sep_holder_r\"><span class=\"vc_sep_line\"><\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><strong>Pro Tips<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">Encourage people to open up about what didn\u2019t work so others don&#8217;t make the same mistakes. Create a <strong>trusting environment<\/strong> and reiterate to participants that sharing their experiences has the power to shape and strengthen future FP\/RH programs.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">Be as specific as possible about <strong>what worked and what didn\u2019t<\/strong>. Sometimes, the least expected actions\u2014for example, purchasing a refrigerator to store certain medications\u2014can greatly affect a program. If these specifics are shared, others implementing similar programs can learn and not have to reinvent the wheel. These <strong>unexpected details<\/strong> make your story unique, catch people\u2019s attention, and inspire others to read the story and learn from it.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">While background and data (for example, a country&#8217;s contraceptive prevalence rates) can be helpful, try to limit this section to only the <strong>most pertinent background data<\/strong> that will help readers understand your program. This will make your story more readable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_empty_space\"   style=\"height: 12px\"><span class=\"vc_empty_space_inner\"><\/span><\/div>\n\t<div  class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_center wpb_content_element\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"vc_figure-caption\"><\/figcaption>\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_empty_space\"   style=\"height: 12px\"><span class=\"vc_empty_space_inner\"><\/span><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h3>You\u2019re Ready to Publish<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Copyedit<\/strong> the story. Ensure the content is as concise as possible, and keep jargon and acronyms to a minimum.<\/li>\n<li>Use <strong>photos<\/strong> to help convey your message, put a face to your story, and show readers the context in which the story takes place. Consider having an external reviewer who is not at all familiar with the story review it before the copyediting process to make sure no clarifications need to be made for readers.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Allow for differences<\/strong> between stories. If publishing a collection, try to be as consistent as possible\u2014but don\u2019t sacrifice content so everything can be uniform. Allowing for differences among the stories can also help ensure the unique voice of each author shines through.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">Weave in <strong>personal touches<\/strong>. Interviews can be helpful in documenting implementation stories. Including quotes from those interviews can make a final story more engaging. Always receive consent to use a quote, and\u2014unless an interviewee wishes to remain anonymous\u2014include the speaker&#8217;s name and affiliation in the final story.
